…dry, but hardly dull

Over fifty years ago, residents of the Fort Worth suburb of Benbrook voted to make taverns and the sale of liquor illegal. We just thought we’d mention this up front (in case you’re someone who feels strongly about it one way or another).

That said, the 22,000 Benbrook residents have filled their dry town with a slew of water activities such as sailing and fishing on the local lake, and the opening of a $4-million YMCA-hosted community center featuring an indoor, 6-lane pool and state-of-the-art exercise center. Along with the new Y, there are a host of recreational ops, including a beautiful new 18-hole course.

Benbrook has also built a brand new library, and several new housing developments are underway. The economy here is healthy and diversified, the crime rate is famously low, and the educational system is predictably solid (children go to school in Fort Worth for grades K-8, where uniforms are mandatory; high schoolers attend Western Hills High School in Benbrook.).

Downtown Fort Worth is an easy 15-minute commute. So, if dry is your thing, head southwest to Benbrook, where the only wet bar you’ll find is on the ladder at the YMCA pool.
