I’ve been to enough Book Clubs hosted by my peers to know that no one ever discusses the book. Book Clubs of my generation – Gen Y, I guess – are a far cry from the one my mom attends (where she actually stresses about getting her readings done). For us, it’s more about the cheese and the wine. Most attendees haven’t read the book, opened the book or even bought the book. But don't get me wrong, it’s fun, for sure.
But if the chance arises that you actually want to discuss a book, head over to the Coffee Talkers Book Club hosted by the Carrollton Public Library.
The evening is made complete by informal yet insightful discussion by actual readers and a cup of joe. It might not be fun the way drinking wine with your BFF is, but it is definitely enlightening.
The featured book for this month's discussion on November 19th is The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed America by Erik Larson. The book is filled with ‘I never knew…’ historical details from Chicago's Worlds Fair of 1893 and a thrilling (fictional) murder mystery. This book is truly fantastic, and one week is definitely enough time to read because you just can’t put it down.
The Coffee Talk discussions are held at the Josey Ranch Lake library branch (1700 Keller Springs Rd, Carrollton, TX 75006) on the 3rd Monday of the month at 7:00p.
If you can't make the third Monday discussion, the Carrollton Public Library holds another book club (different books) on the 2nd Wednesday of the month. This month's group meets this Wednesday, November 14th and the title is Pope Joan by Donna Woolfolk Cross.
Carrollton's library hosts tons of educational events outside of book clubs too - topics are varied, from professional development and networking to anime. Check out the schedule here.
