..."city by the lake"

What could have been just plain ol’ Colony took a turn in 1977 when the city was incorporated. The name Colony was already taken, so the residents added a definitive "The" (kind of like The Man, The Donald, The Boss), and an independent town was born.

Until recently, this area has had a nice residential vibe. Well-paved roads, pretty lawns, parks with baseball diamonds, Lewisville Lake—you get the picture. And getting to downtown Dallas and DFW airport is easy. But a lack of business in this city meant high property taxes, so the Colonists have been doing their best to change the landscape.

In 2003 they built the 5 Star Athletic Complex housing multiple fields for baseball, soccer, football and softball. It's such an awesome place that The Colony was named the "Sports Illustrated 50th Anniversary Sports Town." Austin Ranch, on the southeast side, is an expanse that holds lots of good retail, apartments and condos.

And, there's still more building going on (this place is on a roll). A new marina and a couple more mixed-use developments are on the way.

Guess this is the city to watch.
