Some of the best things about Las Vegas are the surprises it holds. Like, who would expect a top-notch university in the heart of the glitz and business that is downtown?

Yet that’s exactly what the University of Nevada, Las Vegas is. Known for its programs in History, Engineering, Environmental Studies, Management Information Systems and Hotel Management (okay—no surprise there), the school was also recognized by Atlantic Monthly for having one of the most innovative MFA programs and a top doctoral program in creative writing.

Only 1,500 of UNLV’s 25,000 students live on campus, so if you’re choosing to live here, you’ll compete with a student population (a.k.a, the Rebels, their mascot) for campus apartments near UNLV, though soon the campus will extend another 60 acres in North Las Vegas.

Downtown, though, you’ll get the benefits of a lively college area, teeming with coffee shops, entertainment venues and other conveniences. And most likely…we think you’ll find more than a few surprises of your own here.
