Chinatown

Send to a friend

…a harmonious blend of cultures

Step onto Broadway, Spring Street or Hill Street and you’re welcomed into another world: this is LA’s Chinatown, an area both distinct and, thanks to John Huston’s masterpiece, one of the most infamous in the country.

Though not all crime and mayhem, Chinatown’s history is peppered with some drama. In the early 1910s, Chinatown began a steady decline with an influx of opium dens, gambling houses and violent conflicts among Tongs, a.k.a Chinese-American secret societies.

Leave it to Hollywood to save a city: the 1930s brought a New Chinatown with major development by Hollywood set designers, and a “Chinese” prop marking the official entrance was donated by Cecil B. DeMille.

This gentrifying area continues to develop today as LA’s night owls flock to fresh, nearby hotspots, and local artists nab older, abandoned buildings for art galleries. Newer residents don’t interact much with the older Chinese-speaking residents, but the area has retained its unique character with endless open-air markets and myriad Asian cuisines.
