…canyons, horses and industry

In an unlikely mix of horse farms and industrial corridors, the Northeast Valley includes a number of neighborhoods including Lakeview Terrace, Sunland, Tujunga, Shadow Hills, Sun Valley, Pacoima, Arleta, Panorama City and Sylmar (phew!). Large Latino and Hispanic populations comprise the majority of these areas.

As far away from LA as these areas seem, the Northeast Valley has made some significant contributions to Southern California and beyond. Panorama City was once home to the largest GM assembly plant, as well as the hipster-worthy Schlitz brewery (now owned by Anheuser-Busch).

Sun Valley provided much of the stone, gravel and sand used to construct the city of LA between 1920 – 1970s. Though Pacoima had been one of the poorest communities in LA County throughout the late 1900s, it has seen the most significant drop in crime since 2001, when William J. Bratton became the new chief of police.
