West LA…urban lifestyle between the beach and downtown


This area, sometimes called the “Westside,” is made up of Sawtelle, Palms and Mar Vista, each of which offers affordable apartments and modest houses in a safe, urban neighborhood. Each area has its own mix of convenient commercial space and is, for the most part, street parking-only.

Go to Sawtelle to find the best plant nursery, lots of housing options and a thriving Japanese-American community (code for: great sushi). Palms provides young renters with affordable apartments and close proximity to both the beach and downtown. The aptly named Mar Vista, adjacent to Venice, combines ocean views, an artsy flair and some jaw-dropping real estate prices, especially for homes on the hill.

So come along, the Westside is fine! But quit throwin’ up your “Ws.” There’s only a small handful of people that look cool doing that.
