San Diego…a little slice of heaven just north of Mexico
It's home to miles and miles of awesome beaches, enormous waves, a 6,000 ft. elevation gain, and the largest state park in California. Close your eyes for a moment and the mild, Mediterranean-like climate might fool you into thinking you were in Italy or Greece…well, almost. San Diegans think it’s much better here!
San Diego has been on fire with change since the 1980s. Urban renewal is the buzzword here, and new construction is king. Here you’ll find waterfront skyscrapers (isn’t that an oxymoron?), pricey loft developments, condos, classy 5-star hotels and enough chic boutiques, cafes and restaurants to keep even the moodiest prince or princess satisfied.
San Diego has over 100 neighborhoods, each with something unique to offer. Parks and a waterfront promenade are coming to North Embarcadero, and Balboa Park will be linked to downtown. PETCO Park, the newly-built home to the Padres, boasts “the best sight lines in baseball with breathtaking views of San Diego,” and has revitalized the entire downtown area. The Gaslamp District is a chic neighborhood where San Diegans shop, dine, dance, drink and peruse the many art galleries.
But whoa, dude…if you’re jonesin’ for some sun, surf, blade and board action, you probably already know that SD is home to Sector9 Skateboards, TransWorld Surf, Rusty Surfboards and Tony Hawk himself.
All play and no work makes one really tan but really dull. So, San Diego is rich in business, technology and the military. The U.S. Navy, Coast Guard and Marine Corps, among others, have staked a claim here. The University of California San Diego (UCSD), UCSD Medical Center, the Salk Institute in La Jolla and other premier research institutes nearby have made this area one of the most influential in biotechnology.
Then there’s agriculture, computer sciences, electronics, manufacturing, financial services, tourism; the list goes on.
So head for the border, but don’t cross it—everything you want is here.
